  • COMBATING POVERTY

  • EDUCATION

We create study opportunities for young people as a way out of poverty

Bulacan, in the Philippines, is a very poor region where the majority of the population subsists on precarious livelihoods and few people have stable jobs. The nuns of the “Mother of Good Counsel” Monastery have been working in this area since 1991, offering spiritual support and concrete aid to the community.

There are many vulnerable people in absolute need of help. These include children, the elderly and families living in conditions of serious economic hardship, who cannot access health services because they are too expensive and who have no prospect of improving their living conditions. The support of the Augustinian nuns is particularly valuable for young people who see education as the only way out of endemic poverty, and for whom access to high schools is often impossible.

The project

The Augustinian nuns are a point of reference for the poor region of Bulacan. In addition to spiritual support, the nuns provide for the concrete needs for the daily subsistence of those facing the greatest difficulties, such as food, clothing, medicines and medical assistance, education and work. Medical expenses include the purchase of over-the-counter medications, especially those for children and the elderly. Visits, including by specialists, are often offered through voluntary medical activities.

Support for the Bulacan Mission is guaranteed on an on-going basis
